Since the autumn months often surprise us with spurts of hotter temperatures, you may be using your AC well into the beginning of the fall season. Yet, in due course, those colder temperatures will begin to stay, and you may find yourself starting to prepare for the winter months.
Before the temperatures start to drop, it is essential to have a safety check and tune-up done on your heating equipment, especially because you should be shutting down your AC equipment for the season. Ensure you’re taking the correct steps to shut down for the summer by following these easy steps provided by our NATE-certified technicians at Chillicothe Heating & Cooling.
Shut Off Your Equipment
One of the first steps you can take in order to shut your AC down for the summer is to shut the entire system down. Shutting off your AC through your thermostat, unfortunately, will not completely shut the equipment down. By doing this, your AC has the potential to switch on during a warmer day occurring during the colder season. If this happens, it could lead to water or ice being collected into the AC unit located outside of your home. Find the condenser unit and locate the external circuit to ensure your AC is shut down completely for the season. The external circuit is typically located under the flip lid. After finding the external circuit, turn the switch to ‘off.’
Inspect and Clean Condenser Unit
The next step is to inspect and clean your condenser unit. To remove grime and dirt, you may need to wash the condenser unit down. Ensure that you pick up any branches, sticks, or leaves that may be lying around or on the equipment. Before you take any steps forward, make sure your condenser unit is clean.
Protect The Condenser Unit
When you have finished cleaning your condenser unit and let it dry off, place an insulated, waterproof cover over your equipment. Typically, you can buy covers for your equipment from the hardware store, but using waterproof plastic or any weatherproof material that completely covers your equipment is also a good option. To avoid the cover blowing over in the winter season, make sure to tie your cover down on your equipment with bungee cords. Keeping your equipment covered during the colder months will help secure your equipment from inevitable problems or damages.
Following these steps will ensure your AC is good to go for when spring comes again. No damage should be caused during the winter season, but be sure to schedule routine maintenance for your AC to ensure your equipment is running the most efficiently.
