Heat Pump Installation & Replacement in Chillicothe, OH
As heat pumps proceed to climb in popularity, gaining praise as an energy-efficient, effective year-round heating and cooling solution, we at Chillicothe Heating & Cooling excited to offer our heat pump replacement and installation services to residents in Chillicothe, OH, and surrounding areas. With heat pumps offering crisp, cool air in the summer and cozy, warm air in the winter, conserving energy year-round, they aren’t solely an alternative for the old gas or electric furnace. Heat pumps replace the A/C unit as well.
This is because residential A/C equipment extracts hot air from your home and transfers it outside, which cools the place off and removes moisture from the air. Heat pumps, however, “pump” in warm air or cool air, depending on your needs at that time of the year, which is one of the main advantages of having one installed. Because of their convenience and reputed energy savings, it’s clear why so many residents opt for heat pumps.

What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is a single HVAC system used year-round for heating and cooling. It is installed outside the home, but uses an air handler inside the home. Like an air conditioner, it can cool your home using refrigerants. However, during the colder months, it is also capable of providing heat. During the cooler months, heat pumps pull heat from the cold outdoor air and transfer it into the home. During the warmer months, it pulls heat out of indoor air to cool your home.
Heat pumps are powered by electricity. Because they handle both cooling and heating, homeowners may not need to install separate HVAC systems to heat their homes. In colder climates, an electric heat strip can be added to the indoor fan coil for additional heating capacity. Because heat pumps do not burn fossil fuel to create heat like furnaces do, they are environmentally friendly and very energy efficient, which saves you money.

How to Choose the Right Heat Pump
Having an HVAC system that’s efficient plays a crucial role in keeping your Southern Ohio home safe, cozy, and comfortable all year. But how do you decide which type of heat pump is best suited for your home? If you’re looking to replace your old or outdated unit, this guide can help guide you in the process. Before making a decision, consider the following factors:
Types of Heat Pumps
- Air-Source Heat Pumps: Air-source systems are the most commonly installed heat pumps. They have two parts: an indoor unit (air handler) and an outdoor unit (heat pump). A refrigerant, which circulates between the two units through tubing, absorbs and releases heat as it moves back and forth.
- Split-Ductless Heat Pumps:
Split-ductless heat pumps have two units: an outdoor compressor/condenser and one to four indoor air handlers. The quiet indoor units are installed high on a wall or on the ceiling, and are operated by a remote control. Also called mini splits, the systems circulate refrigerant through tubing that connects the indoor and outdoor units. They do not require any ductwork. - Geothermal Heat Pumps: Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground and water source) move heat through a series of pipes buried vertically or horizontally in loops outdoors. The pipes contain a water solution, which is warmed by the constant 50 to 60 degree F temperature of the ground, pond or well, and is circulated into and out of your house.

Energy efficiency
The cooling efficiency for air-source and ductless-split systems is measured by SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The federal minimum standard is 13 SEER for new units for homes in the Northeast, Midwest, Mountain States, and Pacific Northwest; for the rest of the country, the minimum is 14 SEER.

“Should I Repair or Replace my Heat Pump?”
"How Old Is My Heat Pump?"
Unlike a furnace or central air conditioner, a heat pump is required to provide you with warm air in the winter and cold air in the summer. Since your heat pump fulfills a demanding task, it will not last for 15 years. Those furnaces (that your eye enviously) that last over 12+ years are only working less than half the time the heat pump does.
"HOW EFFICIENT IS MY HEAT PUMP?"
The SEER rating is usually located on the side of the heat pump. The higher the number, the more efficient the heat pump is. Your 15-year-old unit is probably 10 SEER or less. Since January 23, 2006, every unit sold in the U.S. is required to have a minimum SEER rating of 13 or higher. To increase heat pumps’ efficiency, engineers started to use a new type of refrigerant a couple of years ago. Also, the configuration of heat pumps has been adjusted to reduce electricity consumption.
"What’s the Projected Cost Of Repairs?"
The age and condition of your heat pump will help you determine how much you should spend for repairs. For example, spending a few hundred dollars on a heat pump that’s middle-aged isn’t unreasonable. However, if the repair estimate comes to more than a thousand, your money is probably much better spent investing in a new model.
